About this work
The lovesick Apollo chases the fleeing nymph Daphne, whose arms are already turning into branches. The river god Peneus, Daphne's father, lies on the riverbank, resting on his urn. Putti watch the scene from the air and from the ground. Below the image an explanatory text in French. Scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Met. I, 452 ff.). Bottom right corner torn off: originally numbered "4"?
