About this work
Portrait of William I in an oval with his coat of arms in the center. Surrounding it are various allegorical objects, including a palm and orange branches, a sword, a balance scale, a spear of liberty with a liberty cap, a book, a mirror, and a snake as a symbol of Prudence, the anchor of hope, and a laurel wreath. On the relief, a depiction of the murder of William I by Balthasar Gerards on the stairs of the Prinsenhof in Delft.
