About this work
Scene based on the story of Bianca Cappello, a wealthy noblewoman who fell in love with the Florentine clerk Pietro Bonaventuri at the age of fifteen. In 1563, the young couple fled from Venice to Florence, where they married. Bianca Cappello sits under a tree while Pietro Bonaventuri holds her hand. In the foreground stands a shepherd who has carried Bianca part of the way on his back.
