About this work

Scene based on the story of Bianca Cappello, a wealthy noblewoman who fell in love at the age of fifteen with the Florentine clerk Pietro Bonaventuri. In 1563, the young couple fled from Venice to Florence, where they married. Bianca Cappello sits under a tree while Pietro Bonaventuri holds her hand. In the foreground stands a shepherd who carried Bianca part of the journey on his back.
