About this work
The evangelist John sits as an exile under some trees on the island of Patmos. In his left hand he holds a quill, and under his right hand lies the book of Revelation. Next to him sits an eagle as a symbol of his inspiration. Behind him the vision of Mary with the Christ child is visible. Below the scene is a two-line Latin text.
