About this work
Here the destitute Preciosa and Majombe, the gypsy woman who reared her, are having a private chat. By happy coincidence, Preciosa ultimately marries a nobleman and turns out to be highborn herself. In Rembrandt’s time, this old story was staged under the title Het Spaansch heydinnetje (The Spanish Gypsy Woman). The print was probably intended for the play’s title page, but was never used.
