About this work

Saint Francis of Assisi receives the stigmata; Francis sits kneeling with both arms outstretched, with the wounds in his palms. To his right lie his sandals and a skull. The crucified Christ appears before him as a seraph, with three pairs of wings, and cherubim in the air beside him. In the foreground sits Brother Leo, Francis's companion.
