About this work

Alexander the Great in the studio of his court painter Apelles. Alexander sits on the right and points to the panel on which figures in a landscape are sketched. Behind Alexander stand three soldiers. Apelles urges Alexander not to criticize the painting, because the students would mock Alexander for his words. Middle bottom three lines of Latin text (free after Pliny's 'Natural History').
