About this work
French gentleman in short cape which he holds under the arm on one side, over an embroidered doublet. Wide collar trimmed with lace, knee-breeches and boots with wide turn-downs. Hat with plumes on the hair that hangs on one side in a long lock (cadenette) downwards. In his right hand he holds an open medallion, containing a woman's portrait and a heart pierced with an arrow: a reference to his state of love. The gravestone next to him, refers to his state as widower. (See Join-Lambert and Préaud, p. 96) In the background a castle with moat.
