Engraver in his workshop

In the engraver's studio, which is depicted here as a representative space in which the prints can be viewed by visitors, an etcher and an engraver are at work. At the window to the left the etcher is working with an etching needle. To the right the engraver cuts his representation into the copper plate with a burin, which he turns around on a cushion. For this precise work the daylight is tempered by a leaf screen. This somewhat obliquely placed screen of oiled paper converted the direct light into a diffuse glow that did not reflect on the copper. (label 'Lying-in Rooms of Art', no. 19)
