About this work
The apostle Matthias sits kneeling on the ground with his hands bound and his head through the opening of a falling axe (forerunner of the guillotine) stabbed. Soldiers are busy with his execution. Men on horseback watch the martyrdom. In the background lies a hilly landscape. Above two shields are depicted bearing the electorate and duchy arms of Saxony.
