About this work
James the Greater (James Major) is executed on the order of Herod Agrippa. The apostle sits kneeling on the ground, his head held by the executioner who draws his sword to behead the saint. On the right stands Herod with his retinue on horseback. On the ground lies the pilgrim's hat as an attribute of the saint. In the tree above hang two shields bearing the electorate and duchy arms of Saxony.
