About this work

A Scholar Standing in a Library Pointing to a Personification of History (Historia) Who Makes Notes of All Memorable Events, Helped by Father Time and Under the Watchful Eye of Minerva and Truth. The Interior Is Enclosed by an Architectural Frame Decorated with Medallions Hanging from Ribbons. The Medallions Show Subjects That Are Part of Suitable Men's Literature, These Are Mentioned on Scrolls. Thus the Theme Love Is Illustrated with a Scene from the Story of Hero and Leander and the Theme Idleness Is Linked to the Bathing Bathsheba in the Garden at the Palace of King David.
