About this work

Mercury stands on a pedestal decorated with the coat of arms of France; Fame blowing a trumpet flies next to his head. In the foreground sits to the right the personification of Labor and Diligence, draped in a garment covered with ants. In her left hand she holds a horn filled with money. To the left stands an Oriental merchant with fabrics and packaged goods; behind him wait two camels.
