About this work

Mercury stands on a pedestal decorated with the coat of arms of France, the trumpeting Fame flies beside his head. In the foreground on the right sits the personification of Industry and Diligence, draped in a garment covered with ants. She points to an oval surrounded by a wreath with the inscription 'Avl', and in her left hand holds a cornucopia filled with money. On the left stands a merchant with fabrics and packaged goods, behind him two camels wait.
