Crier of Versailles, 1692

The Crier of Versailles. Satirical print on the French King Louis XIV who as a town crier brings the news of the defeat in the naval battle at Cape La Hogue where the French under Admiral de Tourville were defeated by the combined fleet of England and Holland under Admirals Russell and Almonde, 29 May to 3 June 1692. In the right hand a bell, in the left hand a long list with the names of the burned French ships, at his feet a barking dog, in the background the naval battle. In the representation an appeal in the name of the king in Dutch and French, at the bottom two verses of four lines in French.
