The Crier of Versailles. Satirical print on the French King Louis XIV as a town crier bringing the news of the defeat in the naval battle in the bay of Vigo, where the French and Spanish fleet was defeated by the combined fleet of England and Holland, October 23, 1702. In his right hand a horn, in his left hand a long list with the names of the lost French ships, at his feet a barking dog, in the background the naval battle. In the representation a call in the name of the king in Dutch and French, at the bottom verses of four lines in French and in Dutch. Part of a group of separate satirical prints on Louis XIV during the War of the Spanish Succession, ca. 1701-1713.
