About this work
In the middle sits Batavia, the personification of the V.O.C., with scepter. At her feet lies the Dutch Lion, watching over a bundle of arrows and a sword. Behind Batavia stands Liberty with liberty cap on a stick, holding a flag with the monogram of the V.O.C. Mercury, the god of trade, sits to the right of Batavia. Eastern merchants lay down gifts while entirely to the right two putti play at a coat of arms with the image of an eagle.
