About this work
The writer Jean de La Fontaine writes in a book and is accompanied by his muse. A putto brings him a cup with water from the Hippocrene, the river on Mount Helicon and the source of poetic inspiration. He looks at the Greek fabulist Aesop who points to the sky where Truth and Fable stand on a cloud. Above them a cloth on which various fables are depicted. In the margin a five-line caption in French.
