About this work

Ceres, goddess of agriculture, appears in the countryside where she hands a spade to a farmer and a farmer's wife. She is accompanied by an allegorical figure with a sheaf of corn in his arms. Behind this pair floats the chariot of Ceres drawn by dragons in the air. This illustration was made for a story from Virgil's Bucolics.
