About this work
After Idomeneus, king of Crete, was expelled by his people, the people decided to look for a new king. When Telemachus arrived in Crete, it was decided that he must become the new king of Crete. The image shows a man kneeling among Cretans who offers Telemachus a crown and a scepter. Telemachus refuses to accept both objects. The illustration was made for the story from book 5 of Telemachus' adventures, written by François de Fénélon.
