About this work
French invasion and breaking of the unity of the Union in 1672. The provinces of Utrecht, Gelderland and Overijssel throw themselves at the feet of Louis XIV. Others flee or are bound as prisoners. In the middle back sits the Dutch Maiden on a plateau on four pillars, behind her the names of the remaining provinces Groningen, Friesland, Zeeland and Holland. In the background devils and a beheading.
