About this work
Satirical print on the English admiral Henry Appleton, commander of the English fleet defeated during the naval battle off Livorno by a States fleet under the command of Jan van Galen, 14 March 1653. The admiral stands on the shore, pointing with his left hand. In the background the naval battle with the name of Jan van Galen. The print is part of a ten-part series depicting beggars and peasants, which also includes various unfortunate figures from the First Anglo-Dutch War, ca. 1652-1654.
