About this work
Satirical print on the English Admiral Henry Appleton, commander of the English fleet defeated during the naval battle at Livorno by a States Navy under the command of Jan van Galen, 14 March 1653. The admiral stands on the shore, in the background the naval battle with the name of Jan van Galen. Part of a series of copies after prints of beggars and peasants, which also includes various unfortunate figures from the First Anglo-Dutch War.
