About this work

Allegory of the Dutch East India Company. Batavia holds a flag with the VOC monogram. Next to her lies the Dutch lion. African and Eastern men bow before her and offer her gifts with royal privileges. On the left stands Mercury, god of trade, Liberty, and a third allegorical figure. On the right, a cherub examines a precious fabric. In the background, a view of the city of Batavia, the center of the possessions of the Dutch. The print illustrates the pride of the Dutch in their colonial territories.
