About this work

Saint John the Evangelist standing between two columns in an architectural frame. In one hand he holds the chalice from which a snake crawls, with his other hand making a blessing gesture. At his feet the eagle with an inkpot in its beak. With its claw it stands on the Gospel. In the background it is seen that John sits in a pot of boiling oil, but remains miraculously unharmed. In the frame below a three-line inscription in Latin.
