About this work
The hypocrite, with a devil above his head, shows that he is fasting. The believer, with an angel above his head, has rubbed oil on his face so that no one notices he is fasting. They stand before a withered and a flourishing tree, presumably a reference to Matt. 7:17: "Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit." Letters next to various elements of the scene correspond to the legend in the margin.
