View of the interior of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam during the inauguration on 2 August 1675. In the center, on the east-facing teba, the chazan. To the right, the Torah scrolls, carried by men and alternated by men with torches or candles, are carried in a procession to the holy ark (aron hakodesj or hechal). Above in the middle, the Amsterdam Maiden and the personification of Freedom of Conscience grant a Jewish priest with a prayer scroll and a kneeling woman with tablets of the law the freedom to practice their religion. To the left of this, a plan of the temple; to the right, a view of the exterior. On either side, medallions with the names of the synagogue regents, members of the building committee, and persons who performed ceremonies during the inauguration. Accompanying this is a separate text sheet with text in three columns in Dutch, Portuguese, and French, and five verses in Dutch, Portuguese, Hebrew, Latin, and French.
