The Oath of the Peace of Münster, 1648

The Peace of Münster is sworn in by the delegates. They stand around a table and swear with raised hands. In the sky two putti with a cord bearing the coats of arms of Frederick Henry, the Spanish king Philip IV and the seven united provinces. Surrounding the central depiction are six smaller scenes of earlier and later moments: the arrival of the delegates, the peace negotiations, the proclamation of peace and the salvo firing in Münster. At the bottom three eight-line verses in French, Dutch and Spanish and the names of the delegates. Print of a worn and repaired copper plate.
