About this work

At the feet of Louis XIV lie the personifications of the Franche-Comté and cities in that region. Next to Louis is a river god personifying the Doubs river. Behind the king, Hercules and Minerva storm a rock, symbol of the fortress of Besançon, with the Spanish lion at the top. In the sky, the constellations visible during the siege can be seen (Pisces, Aries, and Taurus). On the far right, the German eagle sits frustrated in a tree.
