About this work
The print depicts a fable from the Metamorphoses (3:8). A procession of putti, bacchantes and satyrs carries the wine god Bacchus on a litter. The drunk Silenus is also present, riding on a donkey and supported by a satyr. In the foreground of the print one of the maenads is vomiting. In the background of the print King Pentheus of Thebes, the nephew of Bacchus, who forbids his subjects to worship Bacchus.
