About this work

Death, with a bagpipe, chains, and a leafy crown, enters a poor room in a house. The house is inhabited by a family with many children and an elderly couple. The old couple greets Death heartily. They are happy to see him, and the old woman offers him her hand, for death will put an end to their wretched existence at the expense of their children. In the background, a street scene with beggars.
