About this work

Hugo Grotius steps into a chest of books and bids farewell to his wife Maria van Reigersberch, who had devised the plan for his escape in the book chest. Above the doorway to the next room is the text: The Flight of Huyg de Groot. This print was made for the play of the same name by Frederik Duim (1742).
