About this work

Scene from an allegorical play 'der Goden landspel', performed on 1 August 1618 to celebrate the first anniversary of the first Amsterdam Theatre, the Eerste Nederduitse Academie, founded in 1617 by Samuel Coster. In the center, the gods sit together; on the right, allegorical figures associated with Amsterdam. In the background, musical women and the Liberal Arts. Above the image, a beehive with the inscription 'Yver'; on either side, a poem of eight lines in four parts, signed 'Tecum habita', the motto of Samuel Coster?
