The Arminian Dung Cart

D'Arminiaensche dreckwaghen. Satirical print on the Arminians from 1618. The image shows how the most important representatives of the Remonstrants and some other reformers are taken away in a wagon. The wagon is pulled by two wild horses named 'onenichheyt' who both want to go in a different direction. In the wagon sit Johannes Wtenbogaert (on the box), Jacobus Arminius, Petrus Bertius, Conradus Vorstius, Jacobus Taurinus, David Joris, Adolphus Venator, Dirck Volkertsz Coornhert and the 'Afvallighe Weder-dooper'. In front of the wagon stand two Jesuits. On the right in the foreground two Arminians try in vain to get a counter-Remonstrant preacher on the wagon. The man on the left with a burning torch points the wagon the way and represents Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. This edition of the print has French inscriptions next to the Dutch. Below the image a text sheet is pasted with verses and legend in French.
