About this work

Allegorical representation in which the Dutch people are weighed too lightly on a scale against weapons, cannons and muskets. The print argues that balance can be restored by arming the Dutch. On the right, the statue of Liberty wavers. Figures in the scene include William of Orange, the Spanish King Philip II, the Duke of Brunswick and Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol. Below the scene is an explanation and a two-column verse.
