The Just Peace Coach of the Dominicans, 1683-1684

Satire on the Lutheran church disputes in Amsterdam between the Dutch (liberal) and the German (orthodox) direction within the Lutheran congregation, reaching a climax in the struggle over the appointment of the preacher Theodorus Dominicus in Amsterdam in 1683. In the center of the scene is the peace chariot drawn by a swan in which Melanchthon, Luther, Hoppe, and Dominicus ride. To the left of that is the broken garbage cart in which Johannes Colerus (Köhler) and Henricus Vos ride. The carriages are moving towards the Lutheran church on the right foreground. In the foreground are many more figures, Circe with the Westphalian pigs, the baker's woman singing in the withered tree, and the cooperage of Henricus Vos. In the background is hell (left) and the common people engaged in paving and rope-making (right).
