About this work

Allegorical emblem with the pelican pecking its breast to feed its young with its own blood, together with the bronze serpent around the cross. Print no. 12 from the series of 16 scenes of The Miracle of Amsterdam, based on the events of 15 March 1345. Copies after the series by Bolswert. Below the scene in the plate engraved a six-line verse in Latin, below that a six-line verse in book print in Dutch.
