About this work

Allegory on the changes in the Christian religion through time. The tree of religion is pruned by Time. Personifications of secular and spiritual power watch without intervening. At the same time, they trample on Violence and Discord. On the left, Christ points to 'Idolatria', Idolatry, which still hangs in the tree. Emblematic print on the Reformation, ca. 1570. The representation contains inscriptions and Bible texts in Latin. With a caption of 3 columns, each with 8 lines in Dutch and German.
