About this work

Allegory on the tyranny of the Duke of Alva in the Netherlands, 1569. On the right Alva on his throne with Granvelle (with bellows) and the devil, on the left of his throne stand members of the Council of Blood. Before Alva kneel chained the 17 personifications of the provinces of the Netherlands, on the right the silenced members of the States General. Above him a cardinal fishes for riches in a blood pond, behind that the beheading of Egmond and Horne and others in Brussels in 1568. In the background scenes of tortures and executions. In the image inscriptions in German. With a header of 3 lines in German.
