About this work

Allegory on the tyranny of the Duke of Alva in the Netherlands, 1569. On the left, Alva on his throne with Granvelle (with bellows) and the devil; to the right of his throne stand members of the Council of Blood. Before Alva kneel, in chains, the 17 personifications of the provinces of the Netherlands; to the right, the silenced members of the States General. Above, a cardinal fishes for riches in a pool of blood; behind him, the beheading of Egmond, Horne, and others in Brussels in 1568. In the background, scenes of torture and executions. With a three-line inscription in French. Inscriptions in German within the image, including a two-line header in German.
