About this work
Allegorical representation in which the burghers of Haarlem beg the Prince of Orange for help, ca. 1577-1579. The Prince is addressed by the personifications of the Haarlem Burghers, kneeling and chained to the hand of Calamity (Rampspoed). From left to right above: High Necessity, Greedy Desire, General Interest (Tgemeelandt), Administration (Officium) and Piety (Pietas). The representation includes a banner and cartouches with text as speech balloons spoken by the characters. In the text of the Haarlem Burghers, reference is made to "a devastating fire at the end," i.e., the great fire of 1576.
