About this work
The crew is attacked by polar bears while loading provisions from the ship onto the sleds, 25 October 1596. Jacob van Heemskerck and Gerrit de Veer keep the bears at bay with halberds. Copies of the original illustrations in the travel report of the voyage of Willem Barendsz and Jacob van Heemskerck in 1596-1597 and the stay on the island of Nova Zembla, No. 16.
