About this work

Naval battle off the coast of Dunkirk, 18 February 1639. Battle between the States fleet under Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp and a Spanish fleet attempting to break the blockade of the harbour. In the background the places Dunkirk, Mardijk and Grevelingen. In the inscription a verse of 2 times 6 lines in Dutch and the motto: Hard blows teach well.
