About this work

Large representation of the Battle of the Downs between the Spanish fleet under the command of Antonio de Oquendo and the States fleet under Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp, 21 October 1639. Sheet 5: representation divided in two. At the top the sky with the coat of arms of the Generaliteit. Below chained Spanish prisoners and monks on the shore, saluting shots and bonfires celebrating the victory in the Battle of the Downs. Right a cartouche with a verse of 6 lines in Dutch in which a comparison is made with the downfall of the Armada in 1588. Unmounted ensemble consisting of 7 numbered plates, the black strips with the title and text sheet with the description.
