Vision of the downfall of Spain, ca. 1630. Central scene in which the castle of Castile (Spain) is rammed by the Northern goat (Sweden, which declared war on the Habsburg monarchy in 1630) and threatens to sink in a sea of geese (the Watergeuzen or Dutch), whales, and the downfall of the Spanish Armada (1588). On land, various animals (sand hares, rabbits, and mice) and Roman clerics and princes lamenting the downfall of Spain. From heaven the words: Mene mene tekel upharsim. Around the central scene are sixteen small scenes marked A-Q depicting the cruelty of the Spaniards in the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, and against the original inhabitants of the 'New World'.
