About this work
The stern decoration of the English flagship the Royal Charles, captured during the Raid on Chatham on 22 June 1667 by the States' fleet under Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter. The stern decoration depicts the royal arms of Charles II surrounded by the Order of the Garter. The ship was towed to the Maas and broken up in 1673 at Hellevoetsluis; the stern decoration, however, has been preserved.
