Satirical print on the peace concluded in Paris, which put an end to the Kettle War, the disputes between the Netherlands and the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, 8 November 1785. The Netherlands paid 8.5 million guilders and accepted other humiliating conditions. The Dutchman sits chained on a money chest; on the right, Emperor Joseph II on his throne accepts a ship from Mercury. In the background, free navigation on the Scheldt; in the foreground right, Mars frees the river nymph of the Scheldt from her chains.
