About this work
An allegorical monument in memory of Jan van Speyk, 1832. The Dutch Maiden weeping by the monument with portrait and inscription, erected on the Flemish coast. To the left the explosion of Van Speyk's gunboat, to the right the city of Antwerp. On the ground in front of the monument lies the Dutch lion, to the right a child with the names of the victims who perished on the boat. Production possibly in connection with his funeral in Amsterdam on 4 May 1832.
