About this work

Commemorative plate for the celebration of the third centenary of the Relief of Leiden on 3 October 1874. Centrally a depiction of the self-sacrifice of burgomaster Pieter van der Werff. Around this four scenes from the siege and relief of Leiden and five portraits: burgomaster Pieter van der Werff, Prince William of Orange, Jan van Hout, Johan van der Does, admiral Louis de Boisot and the Spaniard Francisco de Valdez.
